The goal of Grunin Capacity is to help nonprofits and nonprofit leaders accelerate their impact. In addition to our Catapult Institute events, we work to foster collaboration and amplify diverse leadership through an array of opportunities and resources.

We have a great resource to share with you from Christine Duffy, Program Director for the Pro Bono Partnership New Jersey Programs. The following was written by Christine Duffy...

Pro Bono Partnership is focused on reaching nonprofits that serve under-resourced communities in New Jersey (and CT and NY) that experience structural barriers to equity and capital.

Pro Bono Partnership provides free transactional legal services to nonprofits that serve economically disadvantaged and traditionally underrepresented populations, enabling them to more effectively feed the hungry, house the homeless, protect the civil rights of individuals, promote the arts, protect the environment, and provide essential programs to, among others, children, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, the unemployed, survivors of domestic or sexual abuse, immigrants, and veterans.

A great way to see how our volunteer lawyers impact the community is to watch our five-minute video that features Jersey City’s Rising Tide Capital and includes clips from President Obama and Jersey City Mayor Fulop, at https://youtu.be/S31sMuM5sRU.

Nonprofits that have a particular legal need may apply for assistance on our website, at https://probonopartner.org/nonprofits-clients/who-we-serve.  To be eligible for our services, an organization needs to demonstrate that it is unable to pay for legal services without significantly impairing resources for programs.

We provide non-litigation legal assistance in areas such as:

  • Contracts
  • Corporate structure and governance
  • Employment law
  • Environmental law
  • Fundraising compliance
  • Intellectual property law
  • Real estate (including leases)
  • Regulatory compliance (e.g., registration, annual reporting, charitable solicitation, and privacy)
  • Tax law and tax-exempt status

We also offer online resources in various compliance areas (https://probonopartner.org/learning-center), an archive of our periodic legal alerts (https://probonopartner.org/learning-center/legal-alerts), and educational workshops (https://probonopartner.org/learning-center/upcoming-workshops-and-webinars), even for nonprofits that do not use us for specific legal matters.  Nonprofits have access to resources such as Tax and Filing Considerations for Small New Jersey Nonprofits, Charitable Registration in New Jersey, and What Must a Tax-Exempt Organization Do to Acknowledge Donations?.

In addition, all nonprofit public charities, even those that are not formally clients, can call our helpline for assistance with legal questions, resources, and referrals to other organizations.  They can also register to receive our e-legal updates and workshop announcements from the “Sign Up for Updates” link at the bottom of each of our web pages.

Note that we do not provide legal services to individuals or engage in litigation.  We help just 501(c)(3) public charities with transaction matters.
